World Premiere | SkirtsAfire Festival MainStage Production

Ayita by Teneil Whiskeyjack is a calling back to one’s spirit and voice. A modern-day creation story meeting Indigenous realities, told through text and movement. Fusing theatre and Indigenous contemporary dance, Ayita navigates through her own story of sovereignty, breaking free from and transcending past personal pain, stepping into her healing and liberation, awakening to her medicine.

Relaxed Performances

Dates: March 11

When the traditional etiquette of a theatre is softened, it’s called a relaxed performance. The reason for this is for people that might not be able to sit quietly in the dark for long periods of time or have atypical sensory processing (parents with young children, the Neurodivergent community are some examples). Ayita relaxed performances allow:

  • Audience members can leave and come back into the theatre as needed
  • Dimmed lighting and dampened sound
  • Some light near the doorways for people to move around safely
  • Sensory kits with headphones and darkened to help neurodiverse audience members
  • Personal quiet focusing devices like fidget spinners are encouraged

This allows audience members to move as needed, to fidget (or quietly stim), use the washroom, and still enjoy the performance.

If you have any questions or need other relaxed performance measures, please visit https://skirtsafire.com/ayita-by-teneil-whiskeyjack-accessibility/ or contact us at info@skirtsafire.com.

Be sure to come early to enjoy the Interactive Art Installation by Adrianne Beauregarde, as well as a multi-media installation created by Indigenous young women through the VIDEA Canada Corps program and the Braided Journeys Program.

We invite festival patrons (as our respectful relatives) to hold a courageous space for Ayita, by sitting with, and being present with an open mind and heart as did the ancestors of this land. There are medicines in the performance and in the lobby; works of art, stories and ceremony that require protocols and a clean space of no alcohol or substances.
