Thinking Out Loud Together: Civil Discourse in Action with Randy Boyagoda

Randy Boyagoda is a novelist, professor of English and the University of Toronto’s Advisor on Civil Discourse, the first such position in Canada. In this talk, he explores the state of civil discourse in our personal, professional, and shared public lives, the stakes for getting it right. Civil discourse advances knowledge, serves the common good, and aids in the pursuit of truth. But it only works if people are willing to trust each other, be curious about other viewpoints, admit they might be wrong about something, and want to learn more. This is thinking out loud together, this is civil discourse in action.

Ultra Violets

Through a physical exploration of the ways queer club culture, plant growth cycles, and sapphic intimacy intersect, ULTRA VIOLETS frames queer becoming as a cause for celebration. In this 55-minute dance-theatre work, an ensemble of queer dancers moves through phases of transformation on both individual and collective scales while inviting audiences to witness this process at hyper speed, moving through rot, rebirth, and everything in between. Set in a world that is part greenhouse, part underground dance club, the piece draws from disco aesthetics and ecology alike, unapologetically celebrating sapphic love and collective acts of resistance. ᐋᒋᒧᐃᐧᐣ âcimowin, Fringe’s Winter Storytelling Series is a celebration of Indigenous storytelling where the word âcimowin carries the essence of story in the Cree language. In the quiet of the season, storytelling warms our spirits, connecting us to our ancestors, culture, and community. As winter blankets the land, our gathering holds special significance. We are joined by Elders who impart traditional wisdom; we hear stories, and experience works in process created by Artists local to Treaty 6 and the Métis homeland; we connect in community, in circle.

ᐋᒋᒧᐃᐧᐣ âcimowin

ᐋᒋᒧᐃᐧᐣ âcimowin, Fringe’s Winter Storytelling Series is a celebration of Indigenous storytelling where the word âcimowin carries the essence of story in the Cree language. In the quiet of the season, storytelling warms our spirits, connecting us to our ancestors, culture, and community. As winter blankets the land, our gathering holds special significance. We are joined by Elders who impart traditional wisdom; we hear stories, and experience works in process created by Artists local to Treaty 6 and the Métis homeland; we connect in community, in circle.
