Object of Divinity
Object of Divinity is an abstract puppet play by Calla Wright (The Alberta Hospital for the Insane) about the life of the Public Universal Friend, a genderless prophet from the 1770s. With an omnipresent industrial score composed and performed live by producer SILKRØAD, it is a visual, poetic piece about gender, divinity, and object-hood. The play uses a mix of object puppet theatre, poetry, and burlesque to tell a story about one of the earliest recorded nonbinary people.
Object of Divinity is a play about The Public Universal Friend, who was a genderless prophet from the 1770s. It's a story about The Friend losing connection with their followers and family after their lover dies very suddenly. They have a stepdaughter they struggle to connect with, and followers who want to take ownership of their land. The Friend is played by a person, but all other characters in the play are played by large puppet versions of objects - someone is a fork, someone is a pen, someone is a hairbrush, etc. The play is part poetry, part puppet show with these objects, and part dance. There will be a musician playing electronic music throughout the show.
