Expanse Lab - Movement + Calligraphy Workshop

This workshop brings together the traditional art form of Japanese calligraphy with improvised dance, where participants embody the brushstrokes of a calligraphy piece they create. Derived from Shion’s own choreographic practice integrating calligraphy, this open-level workshop provides a fun, welcoming learning experience that generates community connection, taking intentional time to connect the mind and body.

Please wear clothes that you feel comfortable moving in; socks and masks/face coverings optional.

*Masks are encouraged but optional. 

About Your Lab Instructor

Shion Skye Carter – Shion Skye Carter is a dance artist from Gifu, Japan, based in Vancouver, Canada. Through choreography hybridized with heritage art forms such as calligraphy, interacting with objects and design, Shion’s work is alive in content and multidisciplinary in form. Their movement utilizes a sensitive intensity, activating spaces to navigate the body’s complex internal and external worlds. Recent presentations include The Dance Centre (Vancouver), Tangente (Montréal), Kinetic Studio (Halifax), and Art Gallery of Ontario (Toronto). Shion holds a BFA in Dance from SFU, and is the recipient of the Iris Garland Emerging Choreographer Award (2022) and the Chrystal Dance Prize (2023).
