Expanse Lab – How To Tour Your Work (And Not Go Broke In The Process) With S.E. Grummett
Class Description
So you’re making a show (or maybe it’s already made) Well done! Claps for you.
But now you want to take it places. Maybe you’ve always dreamed of touring across North America, going to the Edinburgh Fringe. Or touring to Australia and holding a koala.
In this workshop, you will learn practical strategies on how to self-produce, fund, and tour your work nationally and internationally to some of the biggest festivals in the world (Edinburgh, Adelaide, the CAFF circuit and more). This workshop will teach you the tools you’ll need to take that show around the world and how to make it sexy to venues, audiences, industry and programmers (and not go broke in the process.)
In this workshop, we’ll explore:
- A detailed roadmap of the national and international touring landscape in a post-pandemic environment
- How to pitch your work to venues and programmers
- Personalized feedback about how to market your existing (or future) show
- De-mystifying the big festivals (Edinburgh, Adelaide, and more)
- Strategies for self-producing and funding your show
- How to make your project appeal to grant committees, venues and programmers
- Marketing advice on how to stand out amongst thousands of other shows in a festival
- Advice on how to take care of yourself and your brain while on tour
- -Places near the Adelaide Fringe where you can hold a koala
This workshop is for indie theatre makers, comedians, clowns, and any artists who have a new show (or are working on a new show) and are curious about touring.

About Your Lab Instructor
S.E. Grummett (they/them) is a queer, transgender theatre artist from Treaty 6 Territory/Saskatoon. Over the past 5 years, Grumms has created a body of original queer work and relentlessly toured it across Canada, USA, Australia, the UK and Europe, including Canada, US, UK, Europe and Australia. They are the co-creator of “SCUM: a manifesto”, “Girl in the Box”, “Pack Animals” and “Creepy Boys”. Their solo-show, “Something in the Water”, has toured around the world to queer audiences young and old. They have performed, self-produced and sold-out shows at the largest arts festivals in the world including the Edinburgh Fringe (2021, 2022, 2023), the Australian circuit (2021, 2023), Prague Quadrennial (2023), Latitude Festival UK (2023), STOFF Festival Stockholm (2022), Twin Cities Horror Festival (2021) and across Canada.
